Nahum 1

God Is Awesome

1 The apronouncement of bNineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite:

2 A cjealous and avenging God is the Lord;
The Lord is davenging and
Lit a possessor of wrath
wrathful.
The Lord takes fvengeance on His adversaries,
And He reserves wrath for His enemies.
3 The Lord is gslow to anger and great in power,
And the Lord will by no means leave the guilty unpunished.
In the hgale and the storm is His way,
And iclouds are the dust beneath His feet.
4 He jrebukes the sea and dries it up;
He dries up all the rivers.
kBashan and Carmel wither,
The blossoms of Lebanon wither.
5 Mountains lquake because of Him,
And the hills mcome apart;
Indeed the earth is nupheaved by His presence,
The oworld and all the inhabitants in it.
6 pWho can stand before His indignation?
Who can endure the qburning of His anger?
His rwrath gushes forth like fire,
And the srocks are broken up by Him.
7 The Lord is tgood,
A stronghold in the day of trouble,
And uHe knows those who take refuge in Him.
8 But with an voverflowing flood
He will make a complete end of
I.e., Nineveh’s
its site,
And will pursue His enemies into xdarkness.

9 Whatever you ydevise against the Lord,
He will make a zcomplete end of it.
Distress will not rise up twice.
10 Like tangled aathorns,
And like those who are abdrunken with their drink,
They are acconsumed
Like stubble completely dried up.
11 From you has gone out
One who adplotted evil against the Lord,
A
Or worthless; Heb Belial
,
afwicked counselor.
12 This is what the Lord says:

Though they are at full strength and so they are many,
So also they will be agcut off and pass away.
Though I have afflicted you,
I will afflict you ahno longer.
13 “So now, I will aibreak his yoke from upon you,
And I will tear your shackles to pieces.”

14 The Lord has issued a command concerning
I.e., the king of Nineveh
you:
Lit No more of your name will be sown
Your name will alno longer be perpetuated.
I will eliminate the amcarved image and the cast metal image
From the house of your gods.
I will prepare your angrave,
For you are contemptible.”

15
Ch 2:1 in Heb
Behold, apon the mountains, the feet of him who brings good news,
Who announces peace!
aqCelebrate your feasts, Judah,
Pay your vows.
For arnever again will the
Or worthless one; Heb Belial
wicked one pass through you;
He is ateliminated completely.
